Things to remember when playing with technology

This page will be dull and pretty meaningless to most of you as it'll be reminders to myself about how to configure stuff around here and tips to remind myself what to do/not do, so either read on in boredom or skip back to the main page.



Don't ever buy a Power Supply Unit from the company Qtec, they make bad PSU's and their tech support will leave you without a replacement for months.

To get CGI to work, install ActivePerl and add the CGI extension to be processed by perl.exe.Next, go into Control Panel = Administrative Tools = Computer Management (Local) = Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager = Default Web Site (or Default Web Site == cgi-bin if you set it up that way) = Handler Mappings = Add Script Map (once for CGI and again for Perl as per 6. and 7.) For CGI: Request path: *.cgi Executable: c:\Perl\bin\perl.exe "%s" %s Name: Perl Script Map Press 'OK' Say 'NO' to ISAPI message For Perl: Request path: *.pl Executable: c:\Perl\bin\perl.exe "%s" %s Name: CGI Script Map Press 'OK' Say 'No' to ISAPI message Restart IIS Control Panel = Administrative Tools = Services = World Wide Web Publishing = Restart the Service)

To get the counters to work add the HTM extension to be processed by ssinc.dll.

If using WebcamXP, don't forget to create a virtual directory directing Gallery to the correct path.

If you're having slow logons/unable to find the domain, it's DNS!

Open the ports you want to use on the firewall (Dur).

Don't install IT assistant as it uses SQL server and it's crap.

Don't install Undelete Server on pain of rebuild :-(

Current version of Diskeeper is incompatible :-(

Don't install maxmem as it'll cause delays in writing to the pagefile (Piece of shit!)

Don't try to cut scenes from a video encoded with DIVX in Ulead Media Studio Pro 7. It won't work properly.


To go from a uniprocessor Architecture (Celron to P4 with HT for example) you do not need to rebuild. Find the following files - ntkrnlmp.exe - halmacpi.dll and copy them to your c:\windows\system32 folder. Open up boot.ini in your text editor and find the following line: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS=”Microsoft Windows XP Professional” /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn (or something of this sort) and replace that line with: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS=”XP Professional MP” /fastdetect /kernel=ntkrnlmp.exe /hal=halmacpi.dll Make sure there are no line breaks in that line. Now reboot, go through the installation and reboot of the new kernel and you are done. To test that you have SMP or hyperthreading enabled, hit ctrl-alt-del and task manager to see two seperate graphs for the processors.
